The workhorse of the Land Rover family is ready for the next year with subtle restyling for the model first introduced in 2007. The flexible platform is offed in 90 variants and combinations, with short or long wheelbase.

The 2011 Defender can be specified with five or seven seats, a regular cab, pick-up variant, double cab and even a station wagon variant.

Powering the beast up steep inclines and through deep rivers is the same 2.4-liter diesel engine with 90 kW (120 hp) and 360 Nm. The diesel comes mated to a GFT MT-82 manual transmission with six speeds. The 4x4’s permanent four wheel drive has the ability to lock the center differential, assisted by the revised anti-roll bars front and rear.

Unfortunately, since the engine is only Euro 4 approved, the Defender may only be registered as a truck. All versions come with a top speed of 132 km/h (82 mph) and a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint of 15.9 seconds. Average consumption is rated at 10 liters per 100 km (23 mpg) for the Defender’s 90 versions and 11 liters per 100 km (21 mpg) for the 110s.

But Land Rover has never been about quick sprints or fuel consumption. Its true asset is its excellent off-road abilities, which are confirmed by official technical data: it can climb slopes of 45 degrees, descend ones with 49 degree in angle or ones with 153 degrees of exit. It can even stay upright on side slopes of 35 degrees. The figures vary slightly, depending on the type of body and on the basis of the tires used.

This variant of the off-road legend will stay in production until 2013, when the British company will bring out a unique new model, which promises to be much more modern, but at the same time able to not betray the confidence gained from its customers in decades of honorable service.
