Land Rover Discovery to Be Used As Rescue Vehicle

Land Rover Australia has become a sponsor for the 2010 Royal Flying Doctor Service Outback Car Trek, an event which has gathered over $16 million in donations in the Trek’s 20 years of operation.

Land Rover will provide a new Discovery 4 2.7 TDV6 for the duration of the event, which is scheduled to take place in June. The car will travel from Hay in South Western NSW, to the home of the RFDS, Broken Hill, onwards to Maree and the Birdsville Track, to Birdsville, Windorah, Barcaldine, Ravenswood and Hamilton Island.

"We are very pleased to be associated with The Royal Flying Doctor Service which does such great work for the Australian rural community. The Discovery 4 is the perfect vehicle for the trek - nothing can match Discovery's outstanding breadth of capability, luxury and refinement," said Chris Lidis, Operations Director, Land Rover Australia.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service sees the diesel Discovery as being the perfect vehicle for the project, as the trek will travel over all forms of rugged terrain and requires a car that can perform well and withstand the difficult elements.

In 2010, the RFDS operates out of 21 bases across Australia, treats some 275,000 patients, or 750 each day, performs 100 aerial evacuations per day, lands the aircraft 200 times each day from its 53 aircraft, and attends 38 healthcare clinics each day. In addition to the emergency retrieval service, inter-hospital transfers and air ambulance service, the RFDS attends remote health clinics, a Rural Women's GP service, mental health programs, 24 hour phone GP consultation and Australia's only flying dental service- across 80 per cent of the country,” stated the press release.

Australia's Royal Flying Doctor Service does not charge its users for the medical assistance it provides.
