Now that the fourth generation of the Range Rover has been officially presented, it’s easily to see how Land Rover has moved the vehicle upmarket. In fact, this trend has been clearly visible over the years, but what we didn’t know is that the carmaker was was considering making the Range Rover more luxurious a long time ago, so the rise we’ve seen is the slow-motion version of the company’s potential plan.
The perfect example to illustrate this has recently surfaced the web: back in the late 1980s, when the second generation of the car was launched, Land Rover was considering moving the car upmarket and when BMW acquired the brand, it took this one step further by... are you ready? building a V12-powered Range Rover.
The V12 engine from the BMW 7-Series was fitted to the car, which needed to have its front overhang elongated in order to be able to take the new powerplant. The carmaker built two running prototypes, but drawbacks, such as the fact that the longer and heavier front end would’ve seriously affected the vehicle’s off-road abilities, made BMW drop the idea.
