The center is the result of a joint venture between Lamborghini, the University of Washington, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Boeing Company, set up to apply the research from aeronautics and astronautics fields in the super sports car development.
Lamborghini therefore intends to use the results of these studies to develop future vehicles with lighter, stronger and more versatile materials.
ACSL will provide the setting for testing and characterization, manufacturing and machining of carbon fiber materials, which are ideal for the use in the sports car manufacturing due to the density of the material, much lower than steel.
This will reduce the vehicles’ weight and therefore increase the power-to-weight ratio, while also lowering the carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, carbon fiber is known to be stiffer than other materials, increasing handling characteristics. In addition, thanks to its versatility, it decreases the time it takes to make parts and simplifies the structure of the components.

“As Lamborghini has long been influenced by aerospace technology, the University of Washington’s collaboration with The Boeing Company and the Federal Aviation Administration is the complementary fit to furthering our research and development programs that will continue to set the benchmark in carbon fiber technology,” added Winkelmann.
