The four door performance saloon, first presented as a concept at the 2008 Paris Auto Show, was to be "a logical product strategy" as the company called it. The concept even caught on, as it was nominated to the 2008 Concept Design of the Year Awards, alongside the BMW Gina, Buick Invicta, Chrysler ecoVoyager, Citroen Hypnos Land Rover LRX, Mazda Furai, Pininfarina Sintesi, Renault Ondelios and Saab 9-X Air.
Yet, time has passed and nothing seems to come out of it. Unlike the Gina, for instance, which comes back every now and then to haunt Bangle's critics, the Estoque has entered a cone of shadow, hence the rumors of its cancellation.
Lamborghini says the company "has not taken any decision to produce its Estoque concept car." This vague statement is a sign that the new vehicle is still being considered, but, as Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini's research and development head said, the manufacturer is waiting for the opportune moment for the release of the new model.
Lamborghini Estoque was scheduled for release sometimes in 2011, at an estimated price of 160,000 euros. It was meant to take on the soon to be unveiled Porsche Panamera and the Aston Martin Rapide by making use of wide range of engines, including a 5.2l V10, a turbocharged V8 and a diesel unit.
Until a final decision is made regarding the future of the Estoque, Lamborghini fans will have to make do with the Murcielago LP 650-4 Roadster. Even if it is well above the price tag of the Estoque (the LP will cost some $300,000) and it comes in a limited edition, the LP 650-4 Roadster will satisfy the craving for performance: 650 horsepower, 0 to 100 in 3.4 seconds, 330 km/hour maximum speed.
