Lada Granta, Europe's Newest Low Cost Car

When French manufacturer Renault introduced the Romanian-built Logan some years back, the world was amazed at how a low-cost car can present its owners with more than decent features and performances. Needless to say, the Logan was and still is a hit on European markets, some of which traditionally oppose the low cost concept.

Now, Renault is getting ready to do it again. Remember how back in early August we told you about Russian prime-minister's desire to create a low cost car the masses, similar in appeal of the original volks-wagen (people's car)?

Meet Lada Granta, the car which is apparently supposed to take up that role. The Granta will be marketed, according to Inside Line, from $7,100 (EUR5,600). According to French newspaper Liberation, the Granta will be based on the Twingo, but other sources, including AvtoVAZ president Igor Komarov, it will more likely be based on the Lada Kalina platform.

In fact, the new Lada, which is said to be known internally as the VAZ 2190, will replace the Kalina and the Samara. Inside Line reports that the Granta will be a whole line of models, which will start with the sedan, will continue with the hatchback and will eventually end with the wagon version.

The details regarding the Lada Granta are not yet know. If it is indeed the same car as the one for which Putin tasked Mikhail Prokhorov, then we can expect a hybrid version as well, powered by an electric motor developing 67 hp, paired with an internal combustion engine no bigger than 0.6l. This version will be priced at around $10,000 (EUR7,500).
