The incredible figure has prompted the NHTSA and the US Department of Transportation to start what they call the Crackdown on Drunk Driving, a campaign which will run through Labor Day (September 6).
The government warns those still planning to drink and drive to restrain themselves from doing so, as thousands of police agencies from across the nation will take to the streets. Those who have this nasty habit will be bombarded with $13 million worth of television and radio advertising condemning such practices.
"Our message is loud and clear. If you drive drunk you will be arrested and prosecuted,” warns NHTSA Administrator David Strickland.
“There will be no exceptions and no excuses. And if you're below the age of 21, there is zero tolerance for any alcohol in your system whatsoever. That's why we're out there with law enforcement, tackling this major safety issue head on."
The study conducted by the NHTSA showed that 28 percent of drivers drank three or more days a week and still drive, while only 10 percent of drivers who drink do not drive afterwards.
"Drunk driving is deadly, it's against the law, and unfortunately, it's still a problem," said Transportation secretary Ray LaHood added.
"With the help of law enforcement around the country, we are going to continue doing all that we can to stop drunk driving and the needless tragedies that result from this reckless behavior."
