LA Dealer Celebrates Indian Motorcycle 110th Anniversary

Founded in 1901, Indian was America’s first motorcycle company, producing some of the industry’s most iconic models and becoming the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. Now, as the brand is about to turn 110, it will be celebrated on May 14 at the company's exclusive Southern California Dealership, Indian Motorcycle Los Angeles in Harbor City.

Festivities will include a concert, an antique Indian Motorcycle show, food trucks, surprise guests, and displays of the full line of 2011 Indian Motorcycles, including the Classic, Dark Horse, Bomber, Roadmaster, and Vintage.  Hours are from 10am to 5pm. The dealership says that admission is free and all ages are welcome.

Indian Motorcycle Los Angeles is located under the same roof as California Harley-Davidson at 1521 Pacific Coast Highway in Harbor City, one mile west of the 110 Freeway and 5 miles from Redondo Beach.

Indian was a major competitor of Harley-Davidson during its 52-year production run from 1901 to 1953.  After a brief return from 1999-2003, the Indian brand returned in 2006 and was recently acquired by Polaris Industries Inc, the company that also manufactures the Victory cruiser and touring bikes.

However, Indian Motorcycle is to operate as an autonomous business unit. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but what we do know is that Polaris plans to revitalize the Indian brand.

“Polaris will utilize its well-known strengths in engineering, manufacturing, and distribution to complete the mission we undertook upon re-launching the brand in 2006: harness the enormous potential of the Indian brand,”
said Stephen Julius, chairman of Indian and managing director of Stellican, at that time. “Polaris is the most logical owner of Indian Motorcycle. Indian’s heritage brand will allow Polaris to aggressively compete across an expanded spectrum of the motorcycle market.”
