Kymco MXU 700 ATVs Recalled for Fire Hazard

Around 540 ATVs manufactured by Kymco are recalled because they pose a fire hazard to both operator and the vehicles themselves. There have been no fire incidents or injuries in relation to this recall, and Kymco and the Consumer Product Safety Commission are advising all customers to stop using these vehicles until repaired.

The affected ATVs are model MXU 700, sold in the US between April 2014 and August 2014. These vehicles belong to the 2013, 2014 and 2015 year models and include the standard, Camo and LE (Limited Edition) versions. These vehicles were sold in black, camouflage, gold, green, red and silver colors.

A faulty fuel cap which doesn't vent properly

They might have been equipped with a fuel cap which doesn’t provide sufficient ventilation. When riding these ATVs in hot environments or high elevations, the fuel might heat up or build up pressure inside the tank. As a result, the tank might rupture or the fuel might boil out of the tank, spilling on the rider and vehicle. In contact with the hot engine, the fuel can ignite, posing a high burn risk to the operator or a vehicle fire.

Consumers are advised to contact their Kymco dealers and arrange a repair. The authorized dealers will collect the defective gas caps and replace them with proper ones free of charge. “The words KYMCO and MXU 700, MXU 700 LE or MXU 700 Camo are on the front of the hood and on each rear fender. The vehicle identification number (VIN) in the format RFBLU45U*xBxxxxxx is located on the frame behind the right front wheel. The 10th digit of the VIN indicates the model year: D = 2013, E = 2014 and F = 2015,” the CPSC informs.

ATVs with the last six VIN digits in the following ranges are being recalled: DB120111 through DB130158 for the 2013 models, EB120203 through EB130204 for the 2014 model year ATVs and FB120315 through FB320123, for the 2015 models.
