Caselli, 30, had just signed a 3-year contract with KTM, after successfully replacing injured Marc Coma in the 2013 Dakar and making a glorious debut.

According to KTM and Baja 1000 sources, the accident occurred in a sandy, high-speed zone. Caselli was airlifted to hospital, but the passed away during the flight.

KTM technical personnel reports that his recovered bike showed the remains of an animal, and thus hinting that the American most likely crashed after impacting it.

Caselli was a multiple winner of the AMA National Hare and Hound championships and also won 2 stages in his first-ever Dakar rally, this year. The American ride also proposed to his girlfriend Sarah White three months ago.

A true champion, with his first Dakar as a full-time KTM factory rider over a month away, Kurt Caselli will be dearly missed.
