Kubica Regrets Missed Title Opportunity in 2011

Three days have passed since Robert Kubica was involved in a serious rally crash in Italy, and the Polish driver only now seems to come to terms with his medical condition and his projected absence from the Formula 1 scene.

Talking to the media on Tuesday, Kubica's manager Luca Morelli revealed that his client is full of regrets over not getting to race the Lotus Renault R31 in 2011. And although that might sound natural for any driver in Kubica's shoes out there, the regrets Morelli is talking about have a much bigger substance.

For the first time since he used to battle for the world title with BMW, back in 2008, Kubica was genuinely happy and excited over the prospect of a potential title fight. The Kubica/R31 combination would have been a true scare for the championship “big guns” this season, as the car was build to fit the Pole's driving technique entirely. And the first proof of that was handed by Kubica in Valencia, where he ended the first group test of the winter with the best time of the whole F1 pack.

I told him about the accident, and the extent of his fractures and injuries, and Robert was shocked,” revealed Kubica's manager in a recent interview with O Estado de S.Paulo.

He understood that he will be out (of F1) for quite a long time and he is suffering with that. He would have already been driving the new car again at Jerez. It's the first time a team has conceived a car with Robert integrally in mind,” further added Morelli.

On a more positive note however, Kubica is grateful of the way he recovered from the 7-hour operation on Sunday – which is believed to have been decisive for his life, not only his right arm – and is willing to fight for an F1 return as soon as possible.

We are happy because for the first 12 hours the question was whether Robert would survive. When he reached the hospital his condition was critical,” said Morelli. “But now we are planning already to leave the ICU.
