Kubica Organizes Fun Karting Event This Week

Some of the current F1 drivers are prepared to begin testing on their 2009 challengers ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix two weekends from now (see the Toro Rosso situation). Others are in the process of finding out whether they'll still make it to the Hungaroring grid or not (Sebastien Bourdais will surely not, Nelson Piquet is still pending).

The ones who want to take their minds off racing, however, were invited by Polish driver Robert Kubica to take part in a fun karting event prior to the Hungaroring race. According to a report from the GMM news agency, there are several drivers who want to leave F1 testing aside and join their Pole friend in racing 125cc karts on an Italian kart circuit.

The two-day karting event is due to take place next week, but the actual location was not disclosed by the BMW driver, who came up with the idea in the first place.

Amongst the drivers invited to race him there are current F1 drivers (Felipe Massa, Timo Glock, Sebastian Vettel and even Nelson Piquet, although he might not honor the invitation), test drivers (Vitantonio Liuzzi) and former 7-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher. Curiously enough, Kubica's long-time friend and poker partner Fernando Alonso will not honor the invitation.

Kubica's passion for karting is no news actually, as the Pole became the third driver from this year's F1 roster – joining world champions Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen – in running his own karting team. The Pole joined efforts with former sponsor Birel in setting up his own karting operations at the beginning of 2009.
