The Austrian KTM presented their new E-Bike, a race ready dual sport that weighs 90kg (198lbs) and wields 29.5 lb/ft of torque, equal to the torque of a 250cc 2 stroke, hellforleather reported. That's an impressive performance for a bike that weighs 7 kg less than KTM's 125cc enduro. The E-Bike will be powered by rechargeable Li-Ion batteries that will give about 40 minutes of autonomy under “race conditions”.
The batteries can be recharged in less than an hour, though KTM didn't specify the power source needed for this operation. The design of this bike is a classical KTM with a compact silhouette, able to hide the electric engine and the battery pack pretty well. The wheels are similar to any other enduro with 21” for the front wheel and 18” for the back wheel. The E-Bike lacks the presence of the clutch, but it seems to have a regenerative system similar to KTM's KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System).
Further technical details are currently unknown, but it seems like Quantya Strada and Zero X will face serious competition.
The FIM (Federation Internationale de motocyclisme) is promoting th ecological future of motorcycling and supports the use of alternative energy sources. They organize an exhibition of electric motorbikes from different manufacturers along with their yearly conferences. Besides the Austrian KTM, the Swiss manufacturer Quantia will be present, as well as the creators of the TTX01 electric motorcycle.
