It looks like the KTM RC390 is just around the corner, finally, in case the second half of 2014 can be referred to as a close date. Anyway, Indian sources report that the bike is scheduled to arrive in the local dealers’ showrooms sometime in the second half of the year.
A faired, sportier version of the 390 Duke and based on the same engine and chassis, the RC390 is supposed to receive some transmission and ECU tweaks to alter the power and torque deployment, and turn it into a more lively machine. The changes are said to provide a more linear power deployment, faster throttle response and quicker acceleration, but with slightly reduced mid-range performance. Namely, close to what bigger sport bikes are like.
The frame, though essentially the same as the one of the 390 Duke, will have a steeper rake and less trail, favoring sharper turns, while the subsequent shorter wheelbase will make the bike easier to flip through fast turns. Suspensions are also to be revised and made stiffer, with less travel and better suited for track use, while the riding stance and ergonomics will be changed with a higher seat.
While the price on the Western markets is yet unknown, the Indian one is said to be just a bit higher than what the 390 Duke currently sells for. Rumors have it that Europe might get the KTM RC390 for under €6,000 ($8,110). The Honda CBR300R is still delayed, so KTM should do well and hurry with their machine.
