Are you the proud and happy owner of a model year 2014 KTM 690 Enduro R or 690 SMC R? Good for you, but you should pay your dealer a visit, and ask for some mending and tinkering around your bike. The house of Mattighofen plans to have an yet unspecified number of the aforementioned bikes inspected for a certain issue which might affect rider safety.
Namely, the mounting of the rear brake pedal may be less than perfect, KTM declares. Some of the screws which keep the foot break lever onto the footrest mounting may have been partly fastened to an improper torque. KTM specifies that one of the screws may have been tightened to a smaller torque value than what the building specs require.
It appears like one of the tools used in the assembly process was improperly calibrated and this lead to the problem. The issue was reportedly discovered after some quality tests carried out on the production line. KTM did not report any incidents caused by this problem.
The customers are currently being notified and more specific methods for identifying the bikes affected by the recall will soon be made public. The KTM dealers will also be informed and they will inspect the bikes checking for the fault. The remedy is carried out in a matter of minutes, official KTM sources declare, and the repairs will be free of charge.
No estimative number of affected bikes has been announced, and we are waiting KTM to either provide a VIN list or dates of manufacture for these bikes. Either way, you’ll most likely get an email from KTM or your dealer asking you to drop by, grab a coffee and have your bike fixed. Or ,if you have basic mechanical skills and a torque wrench, you can fix this yourself in your garage, with the correct Nm/lb-ft value provided by the dealer.
