Korean GP Track Passes FIA Inspection

Yes, we finally have confirmation that this year's Formula One season will have 19 races, after FIA race director Charlie Whiting gave Korea's new formula one circuit the thumbs-up on Tuesday. After a final inspection at the Yeongam site earlier this week, the FIA official confirmed that the international body will issue a license to the event scheduled two weekends from now, between October 22-24.

The International Automobile Federation has approved the Korean International Circuit in southwestern South Korea after conducting an inspection,” said the event operator Korea Auto Valley Operation, according to a report from the Korea Herald.

The inaugural Korean Grand Prix has been in doubt for the past few months, with the very Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone expressing doubts that the race will go on. However, after several inspections at the track, the FIA officials finally decided that the entire Yeongam complex is completed and ready to host an F1 race.

Nevertheless, some doubts still remain on the well-going of the Korean race, as “a photograph reportedly taken at the circuit on Monday show a bridge over the start-finish straight still under construction, while the circuit's main access road is apparently not yet sealed and the entire site not fully fenced,” as shown in a report from the GMM news agency.

Additionally, with the rain having fallen on the newly laid top layer of the racing asphalt overnight, another concern regards the “sweating” track surface, as the oil seeping to the top layer is unlikely to be passed by the time action kicks off on in Korea, next Friday.
