Korean GP F1 City to Be Completed by 2021

The Korean Grand Prix is likely to become the new Abu Dhabi of Formula One, in the sense that the current F1 track will be joined by a specially-built F1 city in the upcoming years. The futuristic city will be located in the inner section of the Yeongam circuit and, according to the latest reports on this project, will likely be finalized by the year 2021.

For the time being, the Korean organizers have only finalized work on the track, which will host the inaugural Korean Grand Prix next weekend. However, as envisioned by circuit designer Hermann Tilke, the Yeongam circuit will combine, in the future, a permanent track and a city street course.

According to local Korea Herald newspaper, cited by the GMM news agency, the South Korean government already confirmed it has approved plans for the leisure-themed corporate city. It seems the grandiose plan to built a motor racing and tourism related city belongs to Korea Auto Valley Operation (organizers of the Korean GP) and will cost somewhere in the vicinity of $1.67 billion.

In order to have that built as soon as possible, construction of this project is due to commence from as early as next year, with all work to be supervised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Last week, we had presented you a virtual lap of the Yeongam circuit, completed by Red Bull's Mark Webber, together with explanations on what to expect of the Korean track. In the first part of the video, together with a visual simulation of the expected city, Webber says “the last section is kind of a city circuit, with all the architects plans being realized in the future.
