Koenigsegg Working on 1.6-Liter Four-Cylinder Engine with 400 HP

Koenigsegg wants to build a production engine that will have a 1.6-liter displacement, four cylinders, and will develop 400 HP. Don’t get too excited yet, though, as they are not planning an entry-level sportscar based on a GT86 or a Mazda MX-5, but selling the engine to one of their partners.
Who is the partner of Koenigsegg, you ask? Well, it's the Chinese automaker named Qoros, which has already unveiled a cam-less engine for production models, developed with Koenigsegg technology.

Mr. Koenigsegg, the founder of the hypercar brand that bears his name, disclosed that his team is working on a revolutionary piston engine that will apply to production cars that can be used daily.

As explained in an interview with Carbuzz, Koenigsegg can afford to risk developing an engine that might not make it into production, while larger companies do not have that luxury anymore.

Currently, Koenigsegg is working with the Chinese at Qoros, which are surely interested in this new engine. While the development part is undertaken in Sweden, their Chinese partners provide the funding to ensure the project goes smoothly.

For the time being, there is no immediate plan to place this new engine in a production vehicle. It will be just a “proof of concept,” and Koenigsegg claims it will not even need to make 400 HP to do so. With this unit, Christian von Koenigsegg does not want to build millions of 1.6-liter engines, but to show that engineering can still improve the internal combustion unit.

Instead of attempting a re-invention of this kind of power plant, Koenigsegg is just applying the principles used on its hypercars. In the case of this engine, the Swedish company reduced the bore of the cylinder and increased the stroke of the pistons. These engines are known as “under-square,” or “long-stroke” because of this characteristic.

Under-square engines have the advantage of attaining peak torque at lower rpm, but Koenigsegg chose this configuration for heat exchange purposes. Thanks to the latter, Koenigsegg believes it can make the engine more efficient.

The Swedes will also use forged pistons, connecting rods, and valves to ensure maximum efficiency. Koenigsegg currently has the world’s highest specific output engine, so this new unit sounds promising.
