BMW Sauber's Christian Klien will not be present at Formula 1's opening European round this season, in Barcelona. The Austrian driver already received the go-ahead from the BMW team officials to compete in the 1000 km Spa-Francorchamps sports car race, scheduled on the same weekend, in Belgium.
Klien confirmed his presence in the aforementioned endurance race earlier this year, as he signed a deal with French manufacturer Peugeot. However, as announced by Klien himself on his personal website, he will abandon all racing commitments with the aforementioned team should BMW need him in one way or another during the Spanish Grand Prix.
“All necessary precautions have been taken in advance should Christian be called upon to drive the formula one grand prix in Barcelona,” announced Klien on his website.
Apart from his test driving duties with the Hinwil-based team, Klien is also a reserve driver for BMW this season. Should either Nick Heidfeld or Robert Kubica become unavailable for the race at Circuit de Catalunya, Klien will be BMW's first option for a driving role.
The same situation goes for the other Austrian test/reserve driver in the 2009 F1 roster, Alexander Wurz. As Klien, Wurz will drive a Peugeot during the 1000-km Spa-Francorchamps race. Brawn GP will therefore become the second team present at Barcelona without a reserve driver in the pits.
The Spanish Grand Prix is scheduled on May 8 thru 10, and will make for the 5th round of the current F1 schedule.
