Killer Breakfast Chokes a Driver Forcing Him into a Crash with Another Vehicle

When was the last time your food tried to kill you? Well, depending on how healthy your eating habits are, the answer could vary from "your last meal" to "absolutely never."
The driver of a pickup truck in Saanich, Canada, was having his breakfast while driving like so many of us do when something bad happened. The police are torn between him choking on his donut or sipping hot coffee that blocked his airways, but they haven't made up their minds yet. While they're deliberating, though, both the coffee and the donut have been asked not to leave the country.

Yeah, it's hard staying serious on a subject such as this one, especially since the TV report you can see at the other end of this link (cheknews.ca) tries to make it sound as if eating and drinking while driving is a cause of distraction much like using the phone. While that may be true to some degree - anything else you do while driving that isn't driving is by definition a distraction - there is a very important difference between the two.

The thing with eating and drinking is that they're two activities most of us can perform without any sensible input from our brains. Just like we can breathe without concentrating, we can also munch or gulp liquids down our throats. Using the phone - whether to text, browse or even for an old fashioned conversation - will put more strain on our organic central processing unit.

It could be that his breakfast caused this man to lose control of his car, jump over the median, hit another pickup and then roll over into a ditch, but that's hardly cause for concern or strong enough reason to call for banning the use of food and beverages at the wheel. The people interviewed at the end deserve all the credit.

Case #1

Interviewer: “Are you going to be drinking your coffee and driving?”
Woman holding a coffee cup: “Yes, I probably will. But I’m just going up the road. So, I’m going to try not to choke.”
That's another way of saying "Don't worry, I'm not as dumb as that guy, I'll be alright." Good job, nine points.

Case #2

Interviewer: “Do you drink coffee or hot beverages while you’re driving?
Poker-faced man: “All the time.”
Interviewer: “You do?”
Poker-faced man:“Yes. I also walk and chew gum at the same time.
Nothing more to add. Ten points, my friend, you win.
