An incredible improvement over the previous model’s cabin, the 2020 Kia Mohave features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an infotainment system capable of handling multiple tasks at the same time. More or less inspired by the K900 flagship sedan, the mid-size SUV also features 15 speakers for the Lexicon audio system and ventilated front seats.
A 3.0-liter CRDi turbo diesel V6 is the only engine available for the South Korean interloper, connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and part-time 4WD system. Output hasn’t been confirmed at the time of writing, but in the previous model, the six-cylinder plant develops 260 PS (256 horsepower) and no fewer than 560 Nm (413 pound-feet) of torque.
Two cupholders, a cubby, and the gear shifter dominate the center console, along with the driving mode selector and hill start assistance button. Wood, aluminum, and piano black trim complement the leather upholstery and contrast stitching on the dashboard and door cards.
Automatic climate control, a head-up display, wireless charging for your smartphone, quilted Nappa leather, and a 360-degree camera system are just a few other highlights of the Mohave. Even though it’s hard to make a case for this fellow in the United States as the Borrego, don’t forget that Kia has the Telluride in this segment with seating for eight.
The body-on-frame SUV isn’t a redesign from the ground up, but a makeover of the outgoing model. It’s not surprising to find that out, more so if you remember the Mohave isn’t a big seller in South Korea either. Looking at the bigger picture, the massively upgraded interior and exterior tick all the right boxes for customers in the market for this type of vehicle.
Previewed by the Masterpiece concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the 2020 Kia Mohave will go on sale next month. While pricing remains a mystery at this point, there’s no denying the Mohave will be more expensive than the Sorento and Sportage but not on the same level as the range-topping Nexo.
