Kia Starts Testing the Mohave Fuel Cell Vehicle

Pushed by recession and the constant degradation of our planet, most automakers are trying to figure out one of the most complicated questions yet: what to use for replacing the internal combustion engine?

Though most car manufacturer are pushing forward with the research to build electric vehicles, there are still automakers which believe in other possibilities. One of these automakers is Kia, who started in December the testing program for its Mohave FCV model, a vehicle powered by fuel cell.

The car was unveiled at Kia’s domestic sales headquarters in Seoul’s Apgujeong-dong, in the presence of local movie star Yu Ji-tae, lawmaker Won Hee-ryong and Lee Joon-hyun, president of Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning and five lucky customers who were chosen from 17,800 applications to test the Mohave FCV.

The test drive will last for six months. During this time, Kia’s engineers must determine all problems and make the necessary corrections. There is no need to worry about fuel, as the five test drivers are able to recharge for free at six hydrogen charging stations in the Seoul metropolitan area.

The Mohave FCV has a maximum power of 147 hp, can produce 300 Nm of torque and can run at a maximum speed of 163 km/h. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 12.5 seconds and has a range of 454 km on a single charge under 350 bar pressure. It needs five minutes to fully charge, just like a gasoline or a diesel car.
