Kia has finally revealed the shape of its Geneva-bound D-segment preview concept ahead of the official debut in early March. The car that will be shown in Switzerland is called the Sportspace and takes the form of a rather large and stylish estate with seating for four.
We still remember the day when Kia decided to offer the sexy US-spec Optima sedan to its European customers. Some changes were made, including adding a diesel engine, but the overstated lines and massive polished alloy wheels stayed. Now this concept seems to preview an even more European version of the Optima is on its way and could eventually get a wagon/estate body.
Of course, development of the next-gen sedan is well on its way and such a body style has never been seen. Which means Kia is actually testing the waters in Geneva to see how people will respond to a Korean rival for the Insignia Tourer and Passat Variant.
The mid-size wagon was designed in Frankfurt and will deliver “stylish and exciting transportation for four," Kia says. The interior is minimalist and features a long rail that travels the length of the car and splits the seats apart.
The exterior styling is very dramatic, featuring a new headlight design, which Kia calls "ice cube". Red paint is matched with black for maximum visual impact, almost like the company has something to prove in the sports department. To that end, the Sportspace features creases in the bonnet, bulging fender flares and a dual exhaust system around the back.
“We set out to design a car that is a totally new breed of grand tourer – one for active people who need reasonable cargo space on the weekend, but don’t want to compromise moving around in style, comfort and with an element of sportiness,” explains Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer Europe.
