Kia Sorento CUV Production Process Revealed

The car manufacturing process these days looks more like an episode from Star Wars, with all the mean robots being reprogrammed to manufacture cars for mankind. Thus, the History Channel beamed itself at Kia’s facility in so it could reveal how robots build cars for humankind. The TV show Modern marvels decided to highlight of the Kia Sorento CUV gets manufactured from start to finish.

Each of Kia's vehicles takes about 23 hours to complete, and each model starts is journey in life as a 44,000 lb coil of galvanized steel which is being put through an humongous press which cuts the unrolled coil to a specific size before sending the pieces to the stamping press. And just like magic, in less than an hour the pieces are transformed into auto body parts.

The next stop for he pieces is at the welding shop where an army of 242 robots does the job. It is worth mentioning the fact that the 2,000 weld performed on each vehicle would take a full day for humans to complete. The same task is being performed by robots in less than 90 minutes. About 2 hours after the unwrapping of the coil, the car platform enters the paint shop where it will spend almost 30% of its total production time. Also, the paint shop is as sterile as an operating room, given the fact that a single grain of dust could ruin the painting process.

After the frame gets a pre-wash and a chemical dip, it is dipped in an 86,000 gallon tub of electrically charged paint, after the 6 minute bath the car is practically rustproof. After the spa treatment, the car hits the last stop at the paint booth where it receives the final coloring. Before it can hit the road it stops at the general assembly line where the vehicle gets outfitted with electronics, chassis model, and all the pieces and wheels. It is pretty interesting how a coil of steel turns into a Kia Sorento CUV in just 23 hours.
