Kia Says the GT is Wiskers Away From Production

Kia GT - you do remember it, right? - is getting closer to production after South-Korean officials admitted that work is currently underway, and a statement will be made soon enough.

We don't usually build GTs, but when we plan on doing so, we make sure it involves a soap opera that stretches for a couple of years. No, that's not an official statement, although it pretty much sounds like an honest version from Kia Motors.

After showing the GT concept in 2011, Kia started weaving a net of rumors and announcements that claimed the bold four-door concept was confirmed for production and will arrive sometime around 2016. In addition, we also saw two additional concepts from Kia, namely the GT4 Stinger and the freshly revealed Novo Fastback.

According to Drive, Kia GT is ready to go into production. The media outlet spoke to Orth Hedrick, Kia America's head of product planning, and the official had interesting issues to address:

"They're under development. [For] The Stinger we have some more work as far as bringing that to market. The market for a coupé is not strong for the length of time needed to get a return on your investment. So for GT we are actively working on that car," said Mr. Hedrick.

Furthermore, he thinks the public is more interested in buying a sedan than a two-door coupe because you can get both emotional satisfaction and practical features.

Back in 2011, Kia wanted the GT prototype to preview a potential rival for the Mercedes-Benz CLS. Now, that's what we call dreaming big, but Kia impressed with generosity on the performance side. In fact, their 3.3-liter turbo V6 announced a power output of 390 HP, a nice figure that looks good on paper.
