While Kia has a presence at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, the Korean company is still teasing its future exhibits for upcoming events.
The carmaker has released the first official images of the new Niro HUV, a car that the company will unveil at next month’s Chicago Auto Show. In case you’re unfamiliar with the HUV abbreviation, it stands for Hybrid Utility Vehicle, so Kia is talking about a hybrid SUV or crossover.
The all-new HUV is set to add “a fresh dimension to the global compact SUV market.” According to Kia’s statement, the Niro will be a global model and the exhibit that is scheduled for debut next month isn’t a concept anymore.
Kia has designed its latest SUV in two of its styling centers: California and Namyang. While the first name is familiar to everybody, we’ll have you know that Namyang is in South Korea. Resulting from the collaboration between the two studios is a sleek car with sculpted surfaces that remind us of the current Sportage compact SUV. Since the Sportage is a modern design, that’s not such an unfortunate resemblance.
The Niro’s coolest parts will be under the body, as the car is based on Kia’s dedicated platform for eco-cars. The carmaker plans to have the Niro HUV achieve a CO2/kilometer emissions rating of fewer than 90 grams/km in the New European Driving Cycle.
Kia intends to reach this feat thanks to the car’s gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. However, don’t run to the nearest Kia dealer just yet, as the company’s officials have stated that the sub-90 CO2 gram/km figure is subject to change, given that it’s just an expected target and is pending extensive development and homologation.
Kia’s Niro HUV will first be shown at the Chicago Auto Show and is proof of the brand’s efforts to make comfortable, fun-to-drive cars that are also environmentally friendly.
