Kia Recalls 8,000 Sorentos for Faulty Rear Brakes

South Korean manufacturer Kia announced it will be conducting a recall of certain 2011 Sorento vehicles due to brake issues. The vehicles involved were manufactured from September 14, 2010 through October 4, 2010. The brake defect could potentially affect some 8,000 vehicles that were built during that period.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Kia discovered that a number of its new Sorentos could have been fitted with rear brake calipers that may not have been properly machined. The defect could lead to a brake fluid leakage that could pose as a safety hazard.

Should the vehicle lose brake fluid, the malfunction dashboard signal would light, indicating the brake fluid level is low and should be checked. The driver would also experience a soft or spongy brake pedal feel. If not serviced the malfunction would lead to reduced braking power which could increase the risk of a crash.

Owners of 2011 Kia Sorento vehicles built in that timeframe should take the vehicles to their preferred Kia dealership, where technicians will conduct an inspection of the rear brake calipers and replace them if necessary. The safety recall is expected to begin during December 2010. The manufacturer expects that less than half of the 7,697 potentially affected cars will require brake caliper replacements.

Kia has also issued a technical service bulletin today, instructing dealers of potentially sticky or unresponsive gas pedals. This is due to a faulty spring designed to push the gas pedal back into position while driving. Kia considered this defect was not safety-related and decided not to issue a recall.
