Over 3,100 units of the Kia Cadenza from the 2014 model year are called back for the most peculiar of reasons: 19-inch non-chrome aluminum wheels may fracture if the driver runs over large asphaltic imperfections.
The Korean manufacturer informs that if a wheel breaks after running over a deep pothole, the circular rim will separate and the tire will lose pressure in a more or less obvious manner, depending on the situation given.
After Kia and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated other wheels available on the Cadenza sedan, specifically the 18-inch non-chrome and the 19-inch chrome rims, they've found out that only the aforementioned non-chrome 19s are prone to fail under rough driving conditions. According to the results of the investigation, an improper manufacturing process is to blame for the inadequate tensile strength of the wheels in question.
Those 3,107 model year 2014 Kia Cadenza sedans were manufactured between February 1st, 2013 and August 27th, 2013. According to Kia, owners of the cars fitted with the non-compliant rims are to be notified starting this month. Authorized dealership service departments will replace the wheels with new ones free of cost, naturally.
Kia reported to federal safety regulators that no injuries or crashes have been linked to this fault.
