Nevermind the South Korean brand’s dubious way of naming its C-segment fighter because the Cee’d is a pretty complete vehicle for its segment. Both petrol and diesel-fed variants are very popular, but the fairly new Pro_Cee’d GT didn’t cut the mustard.
For the unknowing, the Pro_Cee’d GT is the first performance-oriented Kia model and it’s a pretty enticing alternative to the VW Golf GTI, Renault Megane RS and all the other popular hot hatchbacks. Maybe there’s a bit of brand snobbery to blame here, but the Pro_Cee’d didn’t sell as well as expected.

Too bad snobs don’t know what they’re missing out - 204 horsepower, 265 Nm of torque, a precise six-speed manual box, 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 7.7 seconds, ice cube fog lights adorning a very aggressive front fascia, as well as a lot of features as standard. In order to hike its appeal, Kia is working on an all-new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which will be adopted by the entire Cee’d lineup.

Speaking to Aussie publication CarAdvice, Jurgen Grimm, a bloke that handles Kia’s powertrain development, declared: “we will introduce two versions. One is for the gasoline applications, that means it ends up in a torque range of 270 Nm, something like that, and we have also developed one for our diesel version, that ends up in the torque range 320 - 330 Nm.”

It’s anybody’s guess how the new unit will improve the Pro_Cee’d GT’s acceleration and the rest of the Cee’d range’s economy and emission figures, but it’s a good option to have. The official said that the new DCT transmission is a must have for European markets. Mr. Grimm also said that “next year we will see it in various types of cars, in both brands,” referring to Hyundai and probably the facelifted Veloster turbo.
