Kia Plans a Future Sports Car

A while ago, Kia was just another Asian carmaker that produced average looking, practical models. They were the type of cars driven by people who didn’t care what they drove or how they looked. The brand has changed a lot, with the success of its SUV and hatch ranges across Europe and the US.

What the company now need is a sports car or convertible in the range, according to Kia’s Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer, who was interviewed by Automotive News. Schreyer does not however think that now is the best time for this as he himself states: "I think Kia needs a car like that sooner or later, but at the moment it's not yet the time to make any promises."

Schreyer has been in charge of Kia’s design since 2006, after he ended a 26 year long collaboration with Volkswagen AG where he worked on both VWs and Audis. He is best known for his work on creating the first generation Audi TT coupe. Back when it was launched in 1998 got its fair share of turned heads together with a fair bit of the small coupe market. Thus he should be perfectly suited to creating the soon-to-be Kia sport coupe.

Kia already has a concept, the Kee (pronounced key), that should indicate the future coupe’s lines. It was designed by a team headed by Schreyer himself. The 2+2 is 4.3 meters (169 inches) long, with bold proportions and and a lime-green color. Eye-catching LED cluster lights give it strong frontal features.
