Camaro, Mustang, and Challenger - these are your American muscle car choices. But there used to be a lot more, not only from within these three brands but also Pontiac, Plymouth, or Mercury. Well, Detroit has renounced its addiction to the big-block V8, so perhaps it's time for imported alternatives.
There's no denying that Korean automakers have what it takes to produce a raw, sporty machine, even one that could be called a muscle car. The design capabilities are clearly there, as Hyundai and Kia have impressed everybody with their sporty, bold front ends recently.
Today, one of those front ends is being put to use in a muscle car of the fictional variety. We call it the K5 ZL1 1LE, an amalgamation of numbers and letters which denotes both the replacement of the Optima and the super-sexy performance version of the Chevy Camaro.
With its shark fins and large wing, the 1LE is an ideal blend between a muscle car and a sports car, and so we think it works better in superrenderscars' Korean makeover than a Dodge or a Ford would. It's got to do with the sharp headlights of the K5 sedan and how this works with the pointy brow of the Camaro. While some of you will say this is a waste of time, we're willing to bet that a few will find this as sexy as we did.
Kia has made a number of sporty concepts over the years, but they were closer to traditional luxury than muscle. One good example of this was the GT concept, which transitioned nicely into a production car. And while the four-door coupe isn't selling that well, it might become successful if given the right powertrain.
The only problem with turning the GT into a muscle car is that Kia is a global brand. And while dropping the 5.0-liter V8 under the hood might work in America, it would raise some eyebrows in Asia and Europe. The closest thing to Korean muscle was the original Hyundai Genesis coupe.
It was motivated by the 3.8 V6 and got dropped from the range in 2016. For a while, it looked like a successor was being developed, one which might have been powered by the 5.0L.
