Karma Revero Takes Over from Where the Old Fisker Karma Left off

Five years ago, Fisker Karma was one of the most promising luxury eco-mobiles on the market, offering a four-door sedan that looked just as sporty and coupe-ish as a Porsche Panamera, only a lot better.
The Tesla Model S hadn't broken into the market, so there really wasn't much to choose from for people who wanted to save the planet, but also drive in style. People like Leonardo Di Caprio, for example, a man who openly declared his support for the company and even helped with the funding.

That didn't prove enough, though, so one and a half years and 2,450 Fisker Karmas later, production ended due to financial difficulties. In 2013, the company had to file for bankruptcy, which is when Chinese automotive supplier Wanxlang came in and bought it. Then, the Fisker Karma laid dormant for most of the time, with the occasional rumor of a relaunch surfacing now and then.

Since the founder of the company, Henrik Fisker, didn't have anything to do with it anymore, a new name was chosen, one that would keep its links with the past: Karma Automotive. That's because the first car that it's going to produce will be nothing more than a revamped version of the original, with some yet unconfirmed technical updates as well.

Quoting the Los Angeles Times, Greencarreports says that Karma Automotive has moved the production line from Finland to California and has now started a pilot production run at its new plant. The report claims that the factory could supply as many as 3,000 units per year in the future.

Details surrounding the new car - which is named Karma Revero - are still sketchy, but it is expected to use the same powertrain of the old model. That means the Revero is going to be a range-extended electric vehicle with 230 miles of total range (370 km) powered by two electric motors developing 161 hp and 479 Nm (353 lb ft) of torque.

The car's production version should be revealed shortly, but given the advance that full-electric cars have gained in the meantime, you have to wonder whether the Karma Revero still has a chance of making it. Especially since if it's going to keep the pricing of the old model, it's going to be more expensive than most Tesla Model S versions. All this while still burning gasoline to produce electricity.
