John Lennon's 72 Chrysler Station Wagon Up For Grabs

John Lennon was famously known to have owned a Rolls-Royce Phantom painted in psychedelic colors. But during his final years of life, he and his wife Yoko Ono drove this rather anonymous, green 1972 Chrysler Town & Country Station Wagon. This beat up old bucket was used by Yoko after Lennon’s death on the streets of Manhattan. In 1996 she decided to sell it to a collector who has had it ever since. And now, this very 1972 Chrysler Town & Country Station Wagon will be auctioned by Braswell Galleries in New England.

As you can see in the photo, the Town & Country is essentially in the same condition it likely was when John and Yoko owned it and the seller still has the original New York State title and registration documents. The car was registered to Apple Records and was said to have been John’s favorite automobile because its practicality and modesty allowed him to travel virtually unrecognized. Used primarily for city travel and rides between their Manhattan apartment and Long Island estate, it was also used for one particular cross-country journey.

The car was reportedly used by the famous couple to visit a Chinese acupuncturist who lived in San Francisco. The doctor had helped them stop using heroin, introduced them on to a healthier diet and made it possible for Yoko to get pregnant, according to Lennon’s statements.

Nishi and Fred Seamen, John Lennon’s personal assistants, also used the car in New York City, running errands and shopping for the family. When Fred expressed concern about the car’s bad brakes and worn-out tires, Yoko Ono instructed him to go to their business manager and get a check so that it could be replaced with a Mercedes Benz W123 300 Touring.
