JJ Lehto Doesn't Remember Boat Accident

Less than two weeks ago, we were reporting that former Sauber and Benetton Formula One racer JJ Lehto was on the verge of facing criminal charges for his implication in a speed boat accident that put an end to one of his friend's life.

At 4 AM in the morning, the boat driven by the 44-year old Finn struck a bridge pillar at full speed. While he was able to eventually swim ashore with some major head trauma and some broken ribs, the friend that was with him in the boat did not make it. Several media in the country afterwards reported that Lehto was drunk that morning.

As confirmed by a police officer the day after the accident, Lehto was looking at “safety offences, including culpability for the death of his friend,” but a definitive charge would be announce once it “becomes clearer who did what.”

However, police were unable to conduct a thorough investigation at the time, as Lehto was in the hospital recovering from his injuries, while heavily medicated. The good news is that the former F1 racer has recovered well and can now speak freely, the bad news is that he told investigators that remembers nothing about the accident or the actions leading to it.

The information was reported by Finland's Turun Sanomat newspaper, whose sources did not reveal what will happen next in the investigation. The fact of the matter remains that Lehto failed an alcohol breath test that day (also picked up from unknown sources). We'll keep you posted with further development on this story.
