50-year old former MotoGP rider Jeremy McWilliams will once more be at the helm of a GP machine next weekend at the historic Silverstone circuit. McWilliams will make a wildcard entry in the Moto2 race in the Hertz British Grand Prix, and he will be riding the intriguing Bennet’s Brough Superior Carbon 2 bike.
We’ve reported earlier in July about the intentions of Brough Superior to field a wildcard entry in the Silverstone. The machine differs quite a lot from the rest of the Moto2 grid, as it sports a Honda engine loaded in a carbon fiber monocoque frame with the fuel tank incorporated into the chassis and a matching CF swingarm. Even more, the Bennet’s-backed, TaylorMade Racing-designed machine sports a wishbone front suspension, much like certain BMW machines have, and air ducts channeling air to the tail-mounted radiator.
McWilliams has been on the MotoGP podium in 2008, and was also the last British to do in what would be 8 years. Still not retired from motorcycle racing and having even won in the North West 200 races in the past years, we’ve last seen Jeremy McWilliams aboard the mighty KTM 1290 Super Duke R (awesome video), a bike which he was a test rider and developer.
“With where I am at in my career, I’m doing this to help a small team with a limited budget and a hope of them moving on to bigger and better things. There are no expectations but there’s every hope that we can place the bike where nobody expects to see it, especially if the weather is tricky - that’s what my career has been about! I’ve ridden bikes that people have doubted before and achieved results that people did not expect, I’m not saying that’s going to happen next Sunday but you never know! We’ll all put 100% in and what will be will be,” McWilliams adds.
Grand Prix racing visits the UK August 29-31. The records a Silverstone are currently held by Marc Marquez, with his 2’00.691 Best Pole and Fastest Lap, and by Dani Pedrosa with a circuit record of 2’01.941.
