A while back, in Top Gear’s latest series, the guys headed for Africa to find the source of the river Nile. Their endeavor, in true TG style, had to be filled with all sorts of mishaps and challenges otherwise nobody would watch the show anymore.

If you recall their adventure, you’ll also recall the fact that out of the trio it was Clarkson that went with a BMW. Not just any BMW though, he picked a 1999 BMW E39 528i Touring that, at the moment it was taken to Africa, had 150,000 miles on the odometer, quite a lot for any car.

The 2.8-liter engine and the whole car as a matter of fact, was put to the test across a 1,000 mile stretch that went through Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania. Most of the time, as Jeremy puts it, there was actually no road to go on and yet, it made it till the end with the wheels on, unlike its rivals.

Being very much impressed with the way the little Bimmer handled itself, Clarkson decided to write some sort of review of the car that is most interesting and written in his classic style. Actually, whilst going over it, I found myself not once hearing his voice inside my head, a thing that usually only happened when reading something Morgan Freeman wrote.
