The 2021 Formula 1 season will feature multiple big names returning to the sport, among them Fernando Alonso, who will get behind the wheel of the Alpine F1 Team (formerly known as Renault), and now Jenson Button. The latter however won’t be doing any driving.
Button has signed a multi-year agreement with Williams Racing, where he will act as senior advisor for a team which recently expanded its technical partnership with Mercedes and should be considerably more competitive going forward. Their driver line-up for next year will once again consist of George Russell and Nicholas Latifi.
“I am so delighted to once again be able to say that I’ve signed for Williams. Back when I was 19 it was a moment that changed my life and, despite the fact it was over 20 years ago, I already feel like I never really left. Sir Frank Williams showed faith in me which I will be eternally grateful for and I am incredibly excited to have the chance to come back and help the team as it strives once more for success. There’s a lot of hard work to be done but I have no doubt the future is incredibly bright for this fantastic team and I can’t wait to get started,” he said.
The former 2009 F1 champion will attend multiple Grand Prix events throughout the year, providing the team with guidance while also supporting Williams’ media and marketing activities. Interestingly enough, he won’t have to relinquish his duties as an expert analyst with Sky Sports F1.
During his first stint at Williams more than two decades ago, Button impressed thanks to multiple points scoring finishes, including a P4 finish at the German Grand Prix. During his career, he raced for Benetton/Renault, BAR, Honda, McLaren and Brawn, amassing a total of 15 wins and 50 podium finishes.
This year’s F1 season will kick off in Bahrain on March 28, with the Australian GP having been pushed back to November 21.
