The car was done completely under Jeff’s direction in 2010, and ended up looking absolutely incredible, fitting perfectly within the wide array of other vehicles painted or designed by famous artists over the years.

Using a GT2 M3 model proved to be an inspired move, the car featuring a huge wing at the back that helped the sculptor send his message forward more easily.

Jeff, known for his reproduction of ordinary objects that went on to be sold at various auctions for sums up to nearly $60 million, like the Balloon Dog (Orange) that was sold for $58.4 million at the Contemporary Art Evening Sale in New York, last year.

However, Koons is only the last big name in the history of BMW’s Art Car collection. The tradition was kicked off by Alexander Calder back in 1975 with a BMW 3.0CSL just to be followed only one year later by Frank Stella with his own take on a similar car.

Other famous names that accepted the Bavarians’ invitation include Andy Warhol (1979, BMW M1), Ken Done (BMW E30 M3, 1989), David Hockney (BMW 850 CSi, 1995) and many others.

Speaking about his own car, Jeff was quoted saying “I just wanted to participate. The art world is like a family and I wanted to also be involved in this dialogue of designing an Art Car. Today, I’m proud that this car is there alongside their work, too.”
