Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has big future plans for its SUV and pickup lineups.
The future will bring hybrids to Jeep and Ram portfolios, expected to come to market by 2020. Later on, in 2022, Chrysler’s Pacifica will get a plug-in hybrid version.

The next-generation four-door Wrangler will come to market by 2018 and will be available, at first, with the next generation of powertrains, including a mild hybrid version.

The off-roader will then be launched with a new diesel engine around the year 2018, and it will be offered in a full-hybrid variant around the year 2022.

Meanwhile, the current Ram 1500 will get a new generation in the coming years. According to the FCA’s regulatory compliance scheme, the Ram 1500 will get new powertrains and a mild hybrid variant a few years after the launch of the upcoming generation.

Along with the new plans, Jeep’s sales targets have been updated, Jalopnik informs. The off-road brand is expected to sell almost two million units a year by 2018. The ambitious goal comes after the most successful year in Jeep history, with a 1.2 million unit sales result achieved in 2015.

The upcoming mild-hybrid and hybrid versions of the Jeep Wrangler are present in the range to meet future CAFE standards, along with their next European equivalents.

Furthermore, the specified modifications mentioned above will also account for an eventual increase in gas prices, expected to come along in a few years. The diesel version of the Wrangler will also be inclined towards customers who desire a more frugal vehicle without losing any off-road capability.

In the Ram range, the change towards future mild-hybrid and hybrid versions should not be seen as something negative, as the brand is adapting to estimated future trends and expectations.

Since the hybrid pickup trucks from Ram are still a few years away, we do not expect them to pioneer the segment with such powertrain variants. However, they had better bring significant fuel economy improvements to be able to justify their existence.

The plug-in hybrid version of the Chrysler Pacifica minivan comes as no surprise, as the current generation of the vehicle is confirmed with a hybrid offering. A plug-in variant of the hybrid powertrain was a natural development for such a model.
