Mitsubishi Motors is working towards replacing the Colt, which has been with us for a while now, with the more affordable Mirage hatchback. The car is produced in Thailand, where it’s already available, and will be gradually introduced in Europe and the rest of Asia this year.
Today, Mitsubishi announced the Mirage will be available in Japan starting August 31st, 2012. Prices will start at JPY998,000 ($12,800 or €10,300) and can go all the way up to JPY1,288,000 ($16,500 or €13,400).
Given this ultra-low base, Mitsubishi’s expectation to sell 30,000 units for the 2012 fiscal year, ending March 2013.
The Mirage is offered with a new 1.0-liter three-pot engine with variable valve timing and a start/stop system. This is mated to a CVT gearbox that helps it get a fuel economy of 27.2 km/liter on the Japanese cycle, equivalent to 3.7 l/100km or 64 mpg US.
