JD Power Attacked by CFA on Green Automotive Study

Earlier this week, a piece of troubling news for those automotive players who were looking at the future with confidence was made public. Called the 2011Green Automotive Study, the survey was meant as yet another insight into what appears to be a fast expanding sector of the automotive industry.

The findings of the study, which were basically in line with those of similar reports coming from other organizations, were however misinterpreted by both JD Power and the media. Or, at least, this is what the Consumer Federation of America says happened last week.

Basically, the study raised one very interesting problem this week, in the form of the conclusion drawn by JD Power: the market for green vehicles is limited, will remain so for quite some time and it doesn't necessarily justify the investments into development made by the car makers.

All the other studies agree with the assertion made this week. Even more, all studies agree that by 2015, the US roads will be populated with 1 million electric vehicles, which is also the target set by the Obama administration (1.4 million units of cars equipped with alternative power trains will be sold by 2016). So, where's the problem with this new study? None really. Only that, say the CFA, the media took the “is it worth the investment?” question out of context and blew the matter out of proportions.

"Consumers today are more concerned than ever before about rising gas prices and with over 100 new electric models set to hit the market in the next half decade, fuel efficient hybrid and electrics are not only likely grab a growing market share, they will also push gasoline engines to become more efficient ," said Mark Cooper, director of research at CFA.

So yes, the market for electric vehicles will be limited at first. By this in no way means that the green car sales are in danger or that the sector won't meet its targets.
