Respect in traffic is a two-way street. As much as drivers are demonized for breaking the rules, pedestrians, cyclists or bikers do their fair share as well.
A new compilation of videos showing bad driving was posted online this week by RR&BD Driving School, with the goal of serving as a lesson for all, be they drivers, pedestrians or two-wheelers. However, it’s one video in particular that’s getting a lot of attention and it involves a jaywalker.

It was recorded this summer in Hamilton, Canada. As the car makes a left, it comes right up on a pedestrian crossing the street as if he owns it. Not only is the man jaywalking but he actually stares down the driver for the entire time it takes him to cross all lanes and get to the pavement.

And here he’s met with instant karma: since he’s too busy staring down the driver, he completely misses the post on the pavement and bangs his head on it. Because he’s just come out a winner of the stare-down contest (or so he thinks), of course he acts as if nothing happened and walks away, but the Internet isn’t here for that.

All jokes aside, jaywalking is illegal and also very dangerous. Ultimately, it’s not worth risking your life just so you don’t have to walk a few feet farther to get to a pedestrian crossing.

“Use traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, pedestrian refuges and over and under passes,”
RR&BD Driving says, urging pedestrians to follow the rules just like everyone else. “Make sure traffic has stopped before stepping off the curb. Avoid crossing near the crest of a hill or on a bend. Avoid crossing from between parked vehicles. Establish eye contact with the driver to ensure you have been seen. Keep looking for oncoming traffic while crossing the road.”

The jaywalker does the last two things mentioned there, but in the wrong context. Here’s how karma came for him – skip to the 3.50-minute mark.
