With no doubts whatsoever, the Citroen DS was the most ahead of its time vehicle, regarding both visuals and mechanically. The newest Jay Leno’s Garage episode stars this amazing machine and I invite you take a look at its brilliant solutions.
It all started with the Citroen Traction Avant, the world’s first front-wheel drive car with a steel unitary body frame that managed to make this layout popular in Europe. After its development costs put the automaker in bankruptcy, Michelin injected solid capital into Citroen which started developing another neat thing - hydropneumatic, self-leveling, height-adjustable suspensions.

While this might sound common now, we’ll remind you when this tech debuted on the Citroen DS later in 1955, everybody else was rolling on spiral and leaf springs.

But that wasn’t the only thing the DS managed to wow people with. Just looking at its strange shapes made everyone think about the future. And even for these days you can say it looks futuristic. In fact, the model came third in the 1999 Car of the Century competition that recognized the world’s most influential auto designs and then it was named the most beautiful car of all time by Classic & Sports magazine.

Of course, the Citroen DS has a lot more secrets to share, but we’ll let Jay Leno talk you through them in the video bellow.
