At the beginning of this year, Toyota unveiled it coolest concept vehicle so far at the Detroit Auto Show - the FT-1 sportscar, standing for Future Toyota Nr. 1. A concept meant to showcase what the Japanese automaker has in mind for a future sportscar.
And that future sportscar might be a real successor for the fourth-generation Toyota Supra, if we consider the automaker’s recent nameplate trademark submission.

Proudly designed at the Calty Desing Research in California, the FT-1 concept really shows what Toyota is capable of when it comes to design, especially now when it’s struggling to get rid of its previous old people’s car manufacturer reputation. Toyota’s new brand target now is focusing on attracting young buyers with more “fun to drive” cars, and another sportscar in its lineup is more than welcomed.

Rumors are the next Toyota sportscar will come around in 2016, slotted above the current GT 86 and probably being powered by a hybrid powertrain.

As with other concept cars debuted this year, the FT-1 took a stop at Jay Leno’s Garage recently. Along with the concept car, Calty’s exterior chief designer Alex Shen and interior chief designer William Chergosky came in to explain some of the vehicle’s features and the process that created it - like the nosed front end, sleek headlights, deployable rear wing and the driver-concentrated slingshot cockpit.
