Japan's Maglev Train Just Broke the Speed Record for Trains

Guinness World Records recognizes the Bugatti Super Sport version of the Veyron as the fastest street-legal production car in the world. The top speed is currently set at 267.856 mph (431.072 km/h), which is about 100 mph less than what Central Japan Railway Co. just set with their magnetic-levitation bullet train. Apparently the record won’t remain at these numbers for long since an another test run is scheduled for next Tuesday when it’s expected to reach 373 mph.

By now, the entire planet knows that Japan is into high-speed trains. In fact, the Land of the Rising Sun is constantly improving its railway system. Central Japan Railway Co. made the announcement this Thursday after a seven-car train completed a test run on a track in Yamanashi Prefecture, which is part of a line that will open for business in 2027.

The previous record was set 12 years ago, but according to a spokesman for the railway company quoted by The Wall Street Journal, that record recently set may not stand for long.

These puppies might be the fastest in the world, but these trains won’t actually travel at that speed once the commercial line is ready. The company has projected that the trains will operate at a maximum speed of 505 km/h (313 mph).

The railway infrastructure in Japan is more than impressive, and its transportation system is extremely efficient. What probably made the country have one of the most advanced systems in the world is the government’s decision to divide and privatize JNR back in 1987.

Dozens of Japanese railway companies compete in regional and local passenger transportation markets. Some 250 high-speed Shinkansen trains connect major cities, and Japanese trains are known for their safety and utmost punctuality.
