The Freddie March Spirit of Aviation Display of this year’s Goodwood Revival festival will host several iconic aircraft. While the helicopter made famous by Pussy Galore in the 1964 James Bond Film “Goldfinger” will keep the headline, Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson is also set to bring his Fokker DR1 triplane, the same kind used in World War 1.
The three-day festival held each September at the Goodwood Circuit since 1998 is the only UK event which recreates the golden era of motor sport from the 1950s and 1960s and will start on the 12th. Even though the venue is mainly meant to celebrate the types of road racing cars and motorcycle that would have competed during the circuit’s original period - 1948-1966, the event also has an aviation-dedicated side.

As part of this year’s Freddie March Spirit of Aviation display several iconic flying machines will be presented. The James Bond helicopter, officially known as the Hiller UH-12E4 is the very aircraft in which Galore, played by actress Honor Blackman, flew Goldfinger’s atomic bomb to Fort Knox for the film’s finale. According to Goodwood Motor Circuit, it was also used by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in Oscar-winning film, “The VIPs,” the previous year.

Fans will be able to visit up to 30 aircraft that will form part of the display with other legendary airplanes including a 1948 Tempco “Globe Swift” GC-1B whose previous owner’s father was taught to fly at the age of 14 by aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright - and even had the latter’s signature on his license.

Famous people will also be present at this year’s festival. Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson is set to bring his Fokker DR1 triplane, the same kind of machine used by German World War 1 hero Manfred von Richthofen, aka, The Red Baron, while the largest machine this year will be a Douglas C47A Dakota.
