When Jaguar introduced the F-Type last year, everybody wondered who would buy an XK anymore. It is now time for an obvious official answer from the British company, which recently announced it will end XK production this Summer.
Basically, the only advantage the XK had on the F-Type was a pair of rear seats, but these offered extremely limited space, so the GT’s sales have dropped dramatically since the F-Type arrived. The XK was an aging model, with the signs being the most obvious inside the car, as well as when it comes to the various features offered by the vehicle.

Moreover, the XK had already received all the possible help from the brand, in the form of the special XKR-S and XKR-S GT limited editions.

With the F-Type Coupe now accompanying its open-top brother, Jaguar has plenty to offer in the sports car area. Nevertheless, it appears that the company will not rush to offer a replacement for the XK, despite such a vehicle being on the table.

Sports models of this kind always sell in limited volumes, so it is obvious that Jaguar has other priorities at the moment. One example would be the XE compact sports sedan they teased at the Geneva Motor Show. At the same time, the British automotive producer has to take the development of its SUV project further.

As for the model that will eventually succeed the XK, we have to remember what Ian Callum, the man who leads Jaguar’s design offensive, said at the end of 2012. The designer explained that the XK replacement could move upmarket. Such a plan would make full sense, since they would need to further differentiate it from the F-Type.

Thus, the most likely route for the XK replacement is that of a luxurious Grand Tourer. Still, there are a lot of steps to be made here, including inquiries on market demand. Considering how much interest the Jaguar F-Type has received, the signs should be good.

So, if you’re having an old school moment and want to skip the F-Type in order to get yourself an XK, this would be a good time to talk to the salesmen. There’s a discount feel lying around...
