In an interview with Car & Driver magazine, Jaguar Land Rover North America CEO Joe Eberhardt said the sweet spot in the luxury car market is between $35,000 and $125,000. At the bottom end, we now see the XE, a 3 Series rival, while at the top is the $125,950 SVR model.
Chief designer Ian Callum said last May that the XK might return as a huge coupe based on the next-generation XJ. But it seems that the company now wants to focus more on bread and butter models. Eberhardt claims he is happy with the 400 units of the F-Type and XJ sold each month in the United States and hopes to see increased demand for volume models, such as the F-Pace crossover.
The XK was launched in 1996 as a replacement for the XJ-S. It was available in two body styles, coupe and convertible, with a second-generation model being introduced in 2006. Production ended in 2014, by which time the XKR-S was producing 550 hp and could reach 186 mpg (300 km/h).
As previously stated, there will not be anything below the XE, at least this decade. With the exception of the XJ flagship sedan, the range is thus almost entirely defined. We should see the electric version of the F-Pace and a few new powertrains, but that's about it.
On the Land Rover side of things, the US official is not worried about the Bentley Bentayga encroaching on Range Rover SV Autobiography territory. Instead of adding even more luxury, LR will launch tech updates for the existing SUVs as well as a successor for the LR4.
