Jaguar is currently using a special approach for the luxury segment, with the XJ being closer to the four-door coupe layout than to the traditional recipe used by the class leader, the Mercedes S-Class.
However, this could change in the future, as the carmaker is currently establishing a pathway for the XJ’s replacement, which should arrive sometime in 2016. Insiders claim that the opinions within the company are split between carrying on with this philosophy and introducing a change that would make the future model a close competitor to the S-Class.

On one side, we have German CEO Ralf Speth, who wants to get closer to the latter version, while the other group wants to stick with the first. The CEO might win this fight, not because of his position, but due to the fact that the current recipe might bring a special appearance, but this doesn’t translate into sales, as the XJ is far behind its German rivals.

The Mercedes S-Class will get a new generation soon, so whichever approach is chose, the XJ replacement will have to put up a pretty good fight in order to win more customers.
