The world of hyperpowered station wagons was never a steady environment. Over the years, manufacturers have come, gone and returned to this niche and now it is time to welcome Jaguar to the club. The British carmaker is greeting us in Geneva with its XFR-S Sportbrake.
Now that Jag has produced its first estate (shooting brakes and the Ford-based X-Type don’t count), it is time for the XF Sportbrake to follow its sedan sibling and receive the exclusive R-S treatment.

Under the hood, the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 has been pushed 40 PS and 55 Nm (40.5 lb-ft) of torque over the XFR’s unit. Thus, the driver now has 550 PS and a peak torque of 680 Nm (501.5 lb-ft) at this disposal.

To achieve this, the V8 has received a more generous intake system, one that starts from the larger intakes in the front apron. The exhaust has also been tweaked, with the central muffler being replaced with an X element, while the rear pipes use an almost-straight configuration. Jaguar already promises “a motorsport-style crackle on the overrun.”

The engine is mated to Jaguar’s implementation of the ZF eight-speed automatic, which features the carmaker’s Quickshift technology. This slightly reduces engine torque during shifts in order to speed up the process.

This family-friendly Jag can deal with the 0 to 60 mph sprint in 4.6 seconds, while the 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) run requires 4.8 seconds. Should the driver keep on having fun with the throttle, the car can hit 186 mph (300 km/h).

The extra mass of the estate version meant the engineers had to do quite a bit of work at the on the suspension. The springs and active dampers were recalibrate, while the anti-roll bar and the entire suspension geometry have also been touched. Spring and damper rates have been increased by 30 percent.

The XFR-S Sportbrake talks to the road via a set of 20-inch Varuna alloy wheels. Despite being half an inch wider than those on the XFR, the wheels keep the same weight. As for the Pirelli tires, these were specifically developed for the car. They are 10 mm wider all-round, with the front axle using a 265/35 R20 size, while the rear one features a 295/30 R20 size.

As expected, there’s an extra flavor of aggression in the car’s body kit, all with a touch of carbon fiber.

The XFR-S Sportbrake is included in Jaguar’s 2015 model year range, which arrives in showrooms starting from April 1st. The price is no prank though, as the vehicle's British market pricing starts at GBP82,495.
